The Rights of God


Text: Acts 11:1-18

 

I.         When Peter returned to Jerusalem after the conversion of the Gentile, Cornelius, he met with opposition.

            A.        He was accused of associating with unholy people - Acts 11:2-3

            B.        Peter recounted the events that led him to Cornelius’ house and the miracle that was done there.

            C.        But the key point is found in Acts 11:17

            D.        If this is what God wants, how could any man object?

            E.        Consider then, who is God that He can tell man what he must do.

II.        Ownership

            A.        God is the Creator

                        1.         God created the universe - Genesis 1:1

                        2.         It came into being by His power - Psalm 33:6-9

                        3.         Hence, all that is in the world belongs to God - Psalm 24:1-2

                        4.         In particular God made the spirit of man - Genesis 1:26

                        5.         And so, God claims all souls as His - Ezekiel 18:4

                        6.         As Elihu told Job - Job 33:6

            B.        Man is the creature

                        1.         As the thing made, we cannot tell the Maker what He may do - Romans 9:20-21

                        2.         All of us are the work of God’s hands - Isaiah 64:8

                        3.         God can do with the clay as he wills - Jeremiah 18:3-6

                        4.         We have no right to argue with God - Isaiah 45:9

III.       Righteousness

            A.        God is holy

                        1.         There is no sin in God - I John 1:5

                        2.         He cannot even be tempted by sin - James 1:13

                        3.         God is holy - I Peter 1:15-16

                        4.         God teaches us His way - Isaiah 2:3

            B.        Man is unclean

                        1.         We all sin - Romans 3:23

                        2.         If we claim to be without sin, we have sinned - I John 1:8, 10

                        3.         How can flawed beings chose their way? - Jeremiah 10:23

                        4.         Ezekiel 18:25

                        5.         The wicked have no right to speak of God’s law - Psalm 50:16-17

IV.      Power

            A.        God is almighty

                        1.         God declared Himself to Abram - Genesis 17:1

                        2.         Great are God’s works - Revelation 15:3

                        3.         Great are the works of God - Psalm 111:2

                        4.         Man does well to understand this - Psalm 139:14

            B.        Man is weak

                        1.         The weakness of God is greater than the might of men - I Corinthians 1:25

                        2.         We cannot contend with God who is mightier - Job 33:12-13

                        3.         Can we find fault with the Almighty? - Job 40:2

                        4.         Can we override God’s judgments? - Job 40:8-9

V.        Knowledge

            A.        God knows all things - 1 John 3:20

                        1.         Nothing is hidden from His sight - Hebrews 4:13

            B.        Man knows little

                        1.         Man cannot correct God - Job 36:23

                        2.         We speak without knowledge - Job 38:2

                        3.         How can we say that God doesn’t understand? - Isaiah 29:15-16

                                    a.         It is an error to think that God has limitations like our own.

VI.      Judgment

            A.        It is God who will judge man - II Corinthians 5:10

            B.        Jesus saves the obedient - Hebrews 5:9

            C.        The only way to heaven is by doing the will of God - Matthew 7:21

            D.        The whole duty of man is to serve God - Ecclesiastes 12:13
